Frequency Martial Arts Ed TampaMotivation.

It comes in various forms and everyone is motivated differently.  Some people need the reminder that “hard work pays off” while others need to hear “good things come to those that wait”.  Now, I’m no psychologist and will never claim to be, but I think that simply goes to show that we are all different.

What motivates me, may not inspire you and that is okay.

So what is your motivation?  Why do you get up every morning and do what you do throughout the week, month after month, year after year?  What are your short and long term goals?  Maybe you are looking to get promotion or save up to relocate.  Maybe you’re simply looking to pay for a family vacation without the use of the dreaded credit card or you want to purchase a new vehicle.  On the other hand, maybe your goals aren’t about money or material items.  Maybe you do what you do so you can simply spend more time with family and friends doing things that you truly enjoy doing.

Your exercise program should have goals that you are working towards.  Don’t simply go to the gym to go.  What are you looking to achieve?  Are you looking to lose some weight (that’s the #1 reason why people start going to the gym)?  How are you tracking your progress?  I would hope you would use more than just that misleading scale in the bathroom, because as you work out and build muscle; that five-pounds of new muscle is taking up less space on your frame than the five-pounds of fat that you lost.

That’s one of the reasons why we see these transformation photos.  It’s hard to see the changes when you look at the mirror every day.  If it were that easy, we would recognize that we were putting on the unwanted weight before we stepped on the scale to see we added twenty-pounds.  Think of the feeling you get when your jeans become a challenge to button.  Now think about the feeling of sliding in to them and realizing you’re going to need a smaller size.

I was there.  Wearing jeans with a 38” and even 40” waist.  It didn’t happen overnight, but the changes happened so slow that it was hard to notice.  I started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu because I was not seeing the results lifting weights and running on a treadmill week after week.  I started making smarter food choices because I was actually seeing results and wanted to achieve my goals.  Once I plateaued, I added DDP YOGA to my workouts to challenge myself.

What motivates me?  It’s my family.  Whether it is going to work or taking care of my health, I’m working towards all of my goals so that we can do more things together as a family.

What motivates YOU?

Frequency Martial Arts With John GraybealWell, it’s that time of the year when we make a mad scramble to make a resolution for 2016.   Unfortunately, according to Forbes Magazine, only EIGHT percent of the people that make a resolution actually succeed.  That means 92% FAIL!!

So let’s make a plan for 2016 to ditch the resolution and come up with a list of TEN goals we would like to accomplish.  They don’t need to be astronomical to the point of climbing Mount Everest or travel the world. Start small, but make sure they are goals that we have to make an effort to accomplish.   It’s easier to make small changes to work towards a goal and soon it becomes a way of life: whether it’s small changes to our diet, skipping the chips and going with fruit or cutting back on the nights out to the bar to help eliminate our debt.

A great way to start working towards our goals is to start training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and here are a few reasons why:

Frequency Martial Arts DDP YOGA 01 BeforeEverybody wants results, but not everybody wants to put in the work to obtain the results.

This photo was taken after I had already lost 50 pounds from training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but as I started to become more focused on competing in the various tournaments, I needed to be able to do something to help me lose weight without beating up my body.  I was eating healthier and training BJJ several times a week, but I knew that there were other ways I could be cross-training to improve my cardio, flexibility, strength and my focus.

Yes, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu does all of that, but I needed something I could do when there wasn’t anyone else to train with; that would still push me.

I had always been a fan of Diamond Dallas Page and we connected on December 31, 2011 to discuss my goals and his DDP YOGA program. Continue reading »

People will do some crazy things to lose weight: From popping “magic pills” or having surgery to shrink their stomach, yet these people don’t want to invest the time to step onto the Jiu Jitsu mat to work up a sweat.

If you were to Google the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools in your area, I am sure you would be able to find that not only have the students who have been training on a consistent basis improved their skill sets, but they have also lost weight in the process.

“LOSE WEIGHT WITHOUT CHANGING YOUR DIET” – a lot of people would sign up for that program, but they aren’t. If they were, there would be a BJJ school on every corner in town and school owners would be forced to turn people away.

Unlike a Diet or a gym, it’s very difficult to cheat with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Your teammates all want to get better, so they are going to be pushing you through the drills and sparring sessions. You can’t slack off when someone is attempting to pass your guard in order to mount you and secure a submission. Continue reading »
