People will do some crazy things to lose weight: From popping “magic pills” or having surgery to shrink their stomach, yet these people don’t want to invest the time to step onto the Jiu Jitsu mat to work up a sweat.

If you were to Google the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools in your area, I am sure you would be able to find that not only have the students who have been training on a consistent basis improved their skill sets, but they have also lost weight in the process.

“LOSE WEIGHT WITHOUT CHANGING YOUR DIET” – a lot of people would sign up for that program, but they aren’t. If they were, there would be a BJJ school on every corner in town and school owners would be forced to turn people away.

Unlike a Diet or a gym, it’s very difficult to cheat with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Your teammates all want to get better, so they are going to be pushing you through the drills and sparring sessions. You can’t slack off when someone is attempting to pass your guard in order to mount you and secure a submission.

You HAVE to work at Brazilian Jiu Jitsu! You can tell yourself all day that you did so many reps or ran for a certain time, but if you’re not feeling it at the gym, it’s EASY to slack off. Sure you covered five miles, but most of the time you were jogging or walking on the treadmill. You can’t slack on the mats. Your training partners are pushing you every moment during the drills and sparing sessions. You can’t miss a day of training because that’s one more day of training your teammates are ahead of you in their skill set. The more time you put on the mats, the better you’ll become and the quicker you’ll see the weight come off.

Plus BJJ is a FULL BODY WORKOUT! You’ll never have to worry about looking like that guy who missed a few leg days at the gym because he was too busy developing his upper body. When you’re training BJJ, you need to use you entire body to be able to control your opponent. There will be days that you wake up when muscles that you had no idea you had are sore, but that’s a good thing!

After a few months of training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and seeing the results from your training, one of the following two things happen: 1. You continue to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to keep the weight off or 2, You change your diet and start eating healthier which will lead to more weight coming off.

To truly lose weight and keep it off, you need to really work at it. Buying a gym membership or using the latest app to count your calories may have started with good intentions, but going to your local Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school and working with people that want you to improve so they can improve, will become an amazing lifestyle!

I encourage you to try Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, even if you have never trained a day in your life. The hardest part of BJJ is going to your first class. Once you get there, the rest of the journey is easy!
